We promised to never do recipes on this site and we are not going to start. But, we do think that growing one’s own vegetables is spot on when it comes to saving money, especially during these tough, government taxing, pork ladened spending bill times.
Many on this site have planted or are going to be planting our Veg (pronounced vej. for you non-gradening types) gardens. With this in mind we are asking for our readers to let us know what they are planting this year and is they would be willing to trade with others that might have something they do not.
Experienced gardeners know the surprise of what six tomato and 8 zucchini plants can produce. Therefore, trading for those crook-neck squash your neighbor grew could actually help your pocketbook and leave the government penniless.
If you would like to hook up with other Gardner’s and begin the wonderful process of “co-oping”, then drop us a line at lahabrapost@gmail.com and we will help put together the lahabrapost-Veg Co-op.
Blogs run by Art Padroza (Orange Juice!) and Matt Cunningham (Red County) are going at it over the Fullerton Tax Revolt put together by Fullerton City Councilman Sean Nelson and KFI’s John & Ken.
Watching these two stalwart blogs deliver body shots to each other makes for some great reads. Orange Juice! alleges that Read the rest of this entry »
Orange County Supervisor, Chris Norby used this famous Ronald Reagan quote when he spoke to a throng of council members and other guests, during the ceremony celebrating the Supervisor’s generous monetary donation to open the La Habra Library on Fridays.
The intention was to get the city to tear down the wall surrounding the library patio. This is the infamous patio that the librarian refused to open up to the public…..for 50 years!
Our source tells us that a recent meeting with Jill Patterson (librarian), Sal Failla (Dir. Community Services), and Amir Mozayeny (La Habra Advocate), finally brought about a consensus about the need to remove the “wall.”
This is shocking! Consensus with an advocate! Whats next, dog and cats living together?
We applaud Amir, Sal, and Jill for putting down their knives and working towards agreement to have the wall removed.
As of course with all good news that emanates from deals with the government, there is a catch. A small $10,000 catch. It seems that the city must pay prevailing wage. This means that quotes from private contractors for $3,000 to demolish the wall cannot be used. Prevailing union wage will make the wall demo a $10,000 project.
This is were we begin to auger a hole in our skulls just to keep it from exploding.
We hope that some non-profit will step up to do the work and the city will donate the $3,000 to get the job done.
On Saturday March 7, the John & Ken radio show aired live in Fullerton at the Slidebar. Actually, the Slidebar can’t hold anywhere near that many so it was in the parking lot, over 10,000 patriots showed up to protest the idiots at the state who passed the “Tax” budget. After an extended vacation that was to end after the December holiday, the slap happy lunatics at this site are back and loaded with stories, photos and analysis of the goings on in this sleepy little town.
While we have been away, many things have happened. From the shooting of a grandma to Boy Scouts being cut-off during public comments at the city council meeting when they dared utter those blasphemous words (that are no-no’s) “Graffiti”.
Ah yes, the sounds of democracy flow through our veins during the springtime and we can’t wait to get at it. So, come back and view, rant, and post.
For Tim Shaw to project effective leadership, he will have to deal with the morass created by the City Manager and the Police Chief involved in the campaign material mailed to La Habra Voters after Measure-T was on the ballot.
Tim can show he is a strong advocate of the people by demanding accountability and by personally filing a request of the Fair Political Practices Commission to intrevene, investigate the facts and produce a ruling.
The city deserves to know if its employees have broken the law and are guilty of misappropriating funds for campaigning purposes. If Tim is really serious about being a true Republican that is concerned about better government, then how he proceeds will speak volumes about his commitment to honest government for the people. On the other hand, he may just flea flick it under the table and “go along to get along” as the new guy on the council.
Time will tell whether the citizens have gotten what they bargined for.
Sheer arrogance coupled with unlimited access to the public coffers, proves that the heavy fist of government in La Habra has once again delivered another heavy blow against her citizens. We have not seen such a blatant abuse of power by the government in this town, since the happy chain smoking days of fascist city manager Lee Risner.
Both the city manager, Don Hannah, and Chief Dennis Kies should be fired for their part in the blatant disregard for campaign laws, afterthe two marketing pieces sent out after Measure-T became an official ballot measure.
As for the city council that approved this entire charade, they should be forced, along with Hannah and Kies, to pay back the cost to the tax payers for those mailers. But not in this town. When you can spend a $140,000 to get $3,000,000 a year for twenty years, well, you ‘d do that deal all day! And that’s what they did.
We won’t know for a couple more days the exact total of money the city dumped into their illegal political campaign for Measure-T, but our estimates are over $75,000 and probably around $100,000. If you count the Yes On T committee expenditures of about $40,000 there was a whopping combined $140,000 poured into this taxing measure.
It will take a lawsuit before this city will ever change its ways.
After a long night of voter watch, the results are in and the City of La Habra can be proud that another election has passed and maybe half of the 26,000 registered voters voted. Here are the results:
What if the Measure-T passes? If this were to occur then oversight will be of the first order.
Making sure that who ever is in office is accountable and responsible for spending the funds for the next 20 years as promised is paramount. That no council will ever bond against these funds, thus depriving the right of the people to Read the rest of this entry »
We would like to take time out to thank you, our viewers, that have come by to visit. We have eclipsed 3,500 site visits in a very short time with huge daily numbers in the last week.
We appreciate you stopping by and hope you will keep doing so in the future.
After the 2008 election, this site will keep reporting and giving editorial insight into the decisions made by the city council no matter who sits in the seat.
With a couple of additions in the works, we feel that you will come to rely on this site for analysis of fiscal, planning, and redevelopment policy; Something lacking in the local papers.
Do not come looking for recipes or how to hear how the editor is out in her garden growing herbs for a natural cure for menopausal hot flashes. We all know where you can find that crap reporting but not here. We will continue to mine down to what is really going on and releasing it to you.
Now, go out and vote and remember when you vote, you are doing something that others in the world would die for the right to do. So exercise your right and vote.
If you’re looking for information on the candidates in this town, you can click on VIDEOS in the menu bar and see Tim Shaw and Daren Nigsarian Read the rest of this entry »
A general tax, when passed by the people would require only a simple majority of those who vote. These monies would go into the general fund and can be used for anything the city council would like. Despite all of their promises to apply it towards police and streets, THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT.
Conversely, a specific tax would require a super-majority of those who voted, 2/3or 66%. The tax would then have to Read the rest of this entry »
O.K., we know that we reported on this a few weeks ago and we also posted video of Nigsarian from the City Council interviews where he states his desire to tax the citizens of La Habra. However, now we have video of Nigsarian’s response to Candidate Shapiroaccusing him of wanting to tax water in the Video Link Below.
It is amazing to see Nigsarain lie with such ease when only a few months prior to the League of Women Voters forum he was giving careful, detailed explanations of why we need more taxes and how he would personally guarantee getting a hotel tax passed. AND WANTING TO TAX WATER AS A WAY TO GENERATE REVENUE!
Watch this video and immediately e-mail your friends cause this guy is lying before he even gets into office.
We’ve had numerous e-mails complaining that telephone marketing from actual live callers, not automated computer calls, from the city of Boston, Mass. in support of Measure-T have been hiting homes in our city. Many angry voters have expressed their displeasure with folks from an extremely Liberal state, telling La Habran’s what would be best for them.
We can only surmise at this point, that the ”We Love La Habra – so taxes us hard and long group” will go to any lengths to drain us of our money.
If you go this link, “Socialist La Habran’s Who Know Whats Best For You” web site, you can see the idiots in action. The arguments are weak and promise everything if you only pass the tax. From Erectile Dysfunction to solving MassTransit Issues, the T-Tax will do it all.
We have been getting e-mails and searches on this site for information on Louie Contreras. We are in the dark as you are when it comes to Louie. We have never heard of him before. He did not show up for the La HabraTask Force Forum or the League of Gals/Chamber debate. He does not have a candidate statement in the voter guide pamphlet from the Orange County Registrar of Voters.
For someone who actually wants this office and turned in enough signatures to qualify to be on the ballot, he is acting more like the write in candidate, Joey Amarro. Which in and of itself is not a good thing.
We are canvasing our sources and video of council meetings to find out who he is. If we find anything, then he will get equal time, for good or bad. Depending what side you fall on
This photo ended up in our in-box and we really went over it to make sure its real. Our photoshop gurus poured over it and they think its absolutley phony…..
Tim could never lift that much weight. It appears to be a cross between Jane Fonda workout meets flash dance.
Its true. If you live in the areas of unincorporated La Habra, you are not affected by the sales tax, if it passes, when it comes to buying a car. According to our car dealership buddies, if your address is in say, the island North of Whittier Blvd. off of Palm, then you can go buy your car at Burch Ford or Don Steves Chevrolet and pay no Measure-T tax! Just the good old County of Orange 7.75% sales tax.
These good “island folks” also didn’t have to pay the Utility tax for all those years.
Guess you can’t blame the West-Side island (the largest unincorporated island in LH) for not wanting to be annexed into the city.
The only question is; CAN WE GO BACK TO BEING UNINCORPORATED TOO!
What a interesting politcalpalooza it was on Thursday at the city council chambers. After candidate Larry Dobkin unrolled the mega list of taxes to emphasize how much we already pay to the government, things got boring.
Not until the halfway mark did it begin to sound like a debate.
The big item was when candidate Mike Shapiro accused fellow candidate, Daren Nigsarian, of wanting to bring back the Utility Tax, Hotel Tax, have a sales tax, and TAX WATER!
Nigsarian denied ever saying he wanted to tax water and laughed it off as a joke.
Shaprio looked shocked, as we were, and Shaprio then said “Yes, you did. I saw the video of you during the interview and I posted it on my web site.”
This isn’t the first time Nigsarian has conviently forgotten his past words or deeds.
If you’ve been reading and watching the videos on this site, then you know Nigsarian DOES WANT TO TAX WATER. You heard him in his own words and raising of his eyebrows as if it was a great new revenue idea that he just thought of.
Taxing Tim Shaw, like Tom Beamish, couldn’t answer the question of supporting the sales tax, Measure-T. Both prefaced their statements with “I’m a republican and I’m against taxes…But.” What a shame that two well known republicans can’t stand up for fiscal responsibility. Especially when it comes to Shaw. Working for such an anti-tax elected official as Bob Huff, our 60th state assembly representative, for Shaw to embrace a tax is puzzling, to say the least.
Today, October 16, the League of Women Voters of North Orange County and the Chamber of Commerce will host a Candidates Forum in the La Habra Council chambers at City Hall beginning at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m.
Three city council seats are up for election. Eight candidates seek a seat on the council. Tom Beamish, Louie Contreras, Larry Dobkin, Rose Espinoza, Daren Nigsarian , Robert Ortega, Michael Shapiro and Tim Shaw.
The hypocrisy of Tim Shaw keeps rolling in. As a Republican you think he would be consistent with his views on taxes as he did back in 2002 when he last ran for city council.
This was taken from his campaign statement in the 2002 voter guide:
“Between federal, state, and local taxes and fees, our citizens pay a substantial part of their incomes to the government. As a council member, I will fight to protect our taxpayers from having to shoulder an even heavier tax burden.” Tim Shaw, 2002 Smart Voter Guide excerpt
Today he is 180 degrees different and on the side of liberal democrat Daren Nigsarian(d),Rose Espinoza(d), Tom Beamish(r), and Steve “teflon” Simonian(r).
Selling out Republican ideals is almost a prerequisite in this town to getting elected.
The circus is in town again and the Gals are setting up their side show in the LH council chambers. In order to make the event even more biased, the La Habra Chamber of Commerce is co-sponsoring the event. The Chamber President, Mark Sturdivant, is known to be Daren Nigsarian’s campaign manager. To top it off, the Chamber endorses the Sales Tax!
Can you imagine an association of business people kibitzing in a room and agreeing to ruin their business by taxing their customers when we are in the throes of a recession? Neither could we. Which is why its interesting to point out that only the executive board voted to endorse the tax.
Interviews of buisness women and men throughout the city showed an high number of those who had no idea what Measure-T is, let alone that their Chamber voted to endorse such a screwed up idea.
For those of you not in the know, LH suffers from groups that on the surface appear to be pro-democracy however, in this town many of them have morphed into nothing more than chronic political support groups for the political establishment.
Either way, tune in as we post tape of this event for your viewing pleasure.
Place: City Council Chambers 201 E. La Habra Blvd
Date & Time: October 16, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
Sponsors: The League of Gals and the La Habra Chamber
New city Manger, Don Hannah, has previously been under scrutiny for his releasing of insider information regarding the street sweeping contract and now is the focus of spiking his retirement at the cost of La Habra tax payers.
Before coming to La Habra, Hannah was a Captain for our neighboring city of Whittier until he retired. With a salary of over $160,000 and full benefits that include a car allowance, medical/dental, etc.. Hannah will retire at his highest paid year and La Habran’s will foot the bill.
While the city council wrings there hands over the lack of money to play with, they go and hire the most expensive employee they could get there hands on – a retired Police Captain!
Simonian, Gomez, and Espinoza voted for hiring Hannah while Beamish and the late Steve Anderson voted against.
